TRICARE Benefits: Chiropractic Coverage

Tricare Chiropractic Coverage

Tricare data update 12/21/2010.

Here is some information from Tricare regarding chiropractic coverage.

The National Defense Authorization Act for fiscal year 2001 established the Chiropractic Care Program, replacing the former Chiropractic Health Care Demonstration Program (CHCDP) that ended in Sept. 1999. A five-year phased-in implementation began in 2001.

Eligibility for the Tricare Chiropractic Care Program

Effective Oct. 1, 2001, the Chiropractic Care Program is available only to Active Duty Service Members and only at designated military treatment facilities (MTFs). Family members may be referred to non-chiropractic health care services (physical therapy, family practice or orthopedics) in the military health system or may seek chiropractic care in the local community at their own expense.

Update: 2007 Chiropractic Eligibility

* Active duty service members and activated National Guard or Reserve members must obtain chiropractic care at a designated MTF and must receive a referral from their primary care manager (PCM).

* Family members, retirees and their family members, unremarried former spouses and survivors are not eligible for this program. They may be referred to non-chiropractic health care services in the Military Health System (e.g., physical therapy or orthopedics) or may seek chiropractic care in the local community at their own expense.

Access to the Chiropractic Care Program

Active duty service members may be treated by a chiropractic provider for neuro-musculo-skeletal conditions if referred by their primary care manager (PCM) at one of the designated MTFs. The PCM will determine if specialty care (traditional or chiropractic care) is required. If chiropractic care is considered an option, the patient will undergo a screening process to rule out any medical conditions that would prohibit chiropractic care.

Chiropractic care received outside of the designated locations may not be covered under the Chiropractic Care Program.

I would like to know if TriCare is ever going to add chiropractic care for dependents? My wife is in the Military and the options that are left for dependents are not adequate.

Lisa

I don’t know that answer. It is best that you contact your local congressman’s office and prod them into action. You will get a definitive answer that way.
